  Rubinshtein Serhii Leonidovych (1889-1960)

From November 13th to the end of 20-es years was a director of the Odessa Central Library (the name of library from 1923 to 1930) which has been well-organized and conducted active scientific work. S. L. Rubinshtein grew up in the barrister’s family.  In Marburg, he studied philosophy under the direct supervision of the famous Mr. Cohen. World War I deprived of S. L. Rubenstein of an opportunity to finish education in Germany and he was forced to start the Soviet scientific career, which brilliantly came to the end two decades in Odessa. S. L. Rubinshtein became the winner of the State award USSR, the corresponding member of Academy of Sciences of the USSR, the academician of Academy of pedagogical sciences. In Odessa Serhey Leonidovych led strained scientific, social, and political life, combining scientific work as professor of philosophy with the management of the Central Scientific Library. The specificity of the Odessa period of his activities were in the field of library science and bibliography. In the performances at library conferences of various rank, and in special periodicals, he repeatedly brought up a question of the conclusion of Ukrainian of the bibliography, was an initiator of creation of the national Ukrainian repertoire of the book, fought for drawing up the bibliography on history of the Ukrainian writing and ethnography. This and other issues Rubinshtein devoted his speech at the numerous congresses and conferences: the First Congress of the representatives of academic libraries in Kiev in December 1925, at the Second All-Russia Congress of bibliographic in Moscow in 1926. He was a participant of a congress of employees of scientific libraries in Leningrad in 1926. In 1927, he was elected member of the Presidium of the Bibliographical Commission of NAN, he was active on the board of the Bibliographical Society of Ukrainian in Odessa and was a member of editorial board, which prepared and gave out in the section “Notes bibliographic Ukrainian society” (1928-1930). Under the leadership of S. L. Rubinshtein the library became not only the lead scientific institution providing educational and scientific processes in the city, it became widely known in Ukraine and in the Soviet Union. Its work was completely subordinated to the main motto of the management of library – to transformation of the Central scientific library from a passive book-depository in an active factor of the general education system in the country. Through perseverance and integrity, Serhii Leonidovych in Odessa there was library of Vorontsov.
